Goldenrod

Easily spotted by its bright yellow flower spikes, goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea), also called European goldenrod, is a herb with a long tradition of use.

What is goldenrod used for?

Goldenrod is best known for its role in kidney and lower urinary tract health. It can promote normal urinary elimination functions and help maintain a healthy urinary tract.

The plant naturally supplies a broad mix of active compounds, above all flavonoids, saponins, phenolic acids, and tannins. These constituents continue to drive research into Solidago virgaurea, though what we know today rests mainly on centuries of traditional use of goldenrod rather than large human trials.

Goldenrod tea, extract & capsules

Only the aerial parts are gathered, meaning the flowers, leaves, and stems, and these are turned into preparations such as goldenrod extract, capsules, and goldenrod tea.

Goldenrod tea remains the classic option, infused from the dried aerial parts. The herb also comes as a liquid or dry goldenrod extract and in capsules, formats that concentrate the plant compounds into a more practical daily serving.

Goldenrod dosage varies with the preparation and how concentrated it is. The urinary elimination benefit is tied to an intake equivalent to 6–12 g of dried herb per day.

Are there side effects of goldenrod?

Most people tolerate goldenrod well, but individual sensitivity is worth keeping in mind. Anyone with a known hypersensitivity to goldenrod or to other Asteraceae plants, such as daisies, ragweed, or chamomile, should steer clear of it.
